The original Elmesthorpe Village Hall was replaced in 1977 with the current building, but over the following years was not well supported. By 1997 the hall was facing closure. To try and prevent the imminent closure of the hall and increase its use, an action committee was formed. The first event was organised in March 1998 and these events have continued until the present day.
Over the years the committee has undergone several changes, but always with the same intention, to ensure the continued viability of the Elmesthorpe Village Hall for the benefit of Elmesthorpe and nearby villages, and to provide a social environment for public entertainment. The association has always been non-profit making and donates surplus funds to charities and good causes.
Over the years, the association has helped provide improvements to the hall, furnishings and equipment etc. for the benefit of all groups using the hall. In addition, we estimate that we have donated more than £35,000 to local and national charities.
We have enjoyed a huge variety of different entertainment evenings, including popular music, quiz nights, antiques evenings, Bingo and plant sales. We are very grateful for all the support that these nights have received, and we have genuinely enjoyed meeting you all and sharing time with you.
However, due to increases in cost, a decreasing number of committee members and the sheer hard work and time involved in organising these events, we now find ourselves unable to continue. We are therefore announcing that the Wigston Band in December will be the last event organised by the Elmesthorpe Villagers and Friends Association and that we will not be organising any events for next year.
We know how disappointing this will be, but we hope you appreciate it is not a decision we have taken lightly. We can all look back fondly at the amazing variety of wonderful evenings we have enjoyed together, the people we have met, and the support given to the charities and organisations that have benefitted from our efforts.
The committee would like to say a big thank you to you all and wish you all the best for the future.
